Abstract

This is a letter from C. H. Grisbrook to Dr Andrew Smith, detailing the 1827 discovery of large Organic Remains in the Great Karroo near the village of Beaufort. The remains, which included a large fossil tooth fragment, vertebræ, and ribs, were of such "prodigious dimensions" that they were speculated to be the relics of Hippopotami or the Mammoth species.
