This is a record of the Notices of the Proceedings of the South African Institution from September 1830 to January 1832. The Institution held various meetings, elected new members (including Lieutenant-Colonel Wade and Captain Stockenstrom), and held its Annual General Meeting in June 1831. It also established a reciprocal privilege for visiting members of the Natural History Society of Mauritius.
The proceedings highlight a mix of scientific and practical topics:
-
Geographical/Nautical Science: Papers read included "Remarks on the Eastern Coast of Africa from the Cape of Good Hope to Point Natal" by the late Mr King.
-
Natural History/Medicine: Discussions covered factors to "elucidate Horse-Sickness" in the Colony. Dr Smith announced his departure for the Frontier, later sending extensive collections of birds and specimens to the Museum.
-
Astronomy: Mr Faraguet provided an account and orbital elements of a Comet seen in March 1830.
-
Physics/Engineering (Detailed): Dr Adamson presented a detailed outline of a paper on Steamboat Propulsion, analysing different paddle mechanisms (rotary vs. rectilinear, direct vs. oblique impact), concluding that the common paddle wheel was superior for ordinary navigation. He also exhibited and described a complex, self-registering Thermometer designed to accurately track temperature variations by using alcohol and mercury to shift the instrument's centre of gravity.
-
Local Industry/Horticulture: The Institution awarded medals at a show of Fruit, Vegetables, etc. in February 1831 and offered new premiums for the best specimen of Cape Brandy and Cape-grown Leaf Tobacco.
The Institution concluded by agreeing to lease the building "Machtenberg" as a Depository for the Museum.
