Local intelligence

Abstract

This report provides a series of local intelligence updates and statistical data from the Cape of Good Hope colony around the period of 1829-1830. The primary focus is on the establishment and early progress of a New Settlement for Hottentots on the Cat River, authorised in May 1829, intended to promote landholding and cultivation over servitude. A detailed statistical table from January 1830 shows the population, land cultivated, and livestock across 18 locations, highlighting their initial efforts in constructing irrigation drains. The report also includes brief criminal and social notes, such as the execution of a Khoi named Jan Maggerman for murder, whose "religious ignorance and subsequent fervent conversion" were emphasised, and reports of Bushmen depredations (murder and cattle/sheep theft).

Educational advancements are noted with the opening of a School of Industry and the formation of a committee for Infant Schools under the patronage of Lady Frances Cole. The report sorrowfully records the deaths of pioneering travellers Messrs. Cowie and Green, who crossed from the Cape to Delagoa Bay, likely succumbing to fever.

Finally, extensive statistical tables are provided: meteorological data for Cape Town (1829), a detailed breakdown of articles traded at the Caffres' Fair (1826–1829), a summary of Postage revenue (1798–1829), and a complex table itemising individuals convicted and acquitted for various crimes (1829), categorised by race.
