At the first meeting (date unclear, but preceding September 1st), Dr Bailey and Mr Nisbet were elected Ordinary Members. Lieutenant I. Biddulph, R.N., of Bathurst, was elected a Corresponding Member. Two scientific papers were read:

A continuation of "Remarks on the Geology of South Africa" by the Rev. Dr Thom of Tulbagh.

A continuation of the "History of the Cape Colony" by the Rev. M. Borcherds of Stellenbosch, covering the second year of Van Riebeeck's government.
Items tabled included a Register of the weather at Algoa Bay during 1826 and 1828, forwarded by Captain Evatt, and a Chart of the Harbour at Port Natal, forwarded by Mr Frances.
At the Ordinary Monthly Meeting held on Wednesday, September 1st, Mr J. Cloete of Cape Town was admitted as a member. The papers read were:

A continuation of "Remarks on the Culture of Exotic Vegetables" by Mr Bowie.

Extracts from the Journal of Mr Andrew Bain, detailing his visit to some of the interior tribes.
Both the Bowie and Bain papers were printed in that issue of the South African Journal.
